MOST MOVIE BUFFS know that Clint Eastwood's classic creepy stalker story, "Play Misty for Me," was filmed in Monterey and Carmel in 1971, but did you know that the Marlon Brando/Karl Malden Western "One-Eyed Jacks" was filmed in Pebble Beach and Big Sur in 1961?

Tom Hanks' funny and exciting "Turner & Hooch" is a well-known local favorite, especially in Pacific Grove, where it was filmed in 1989, but who remembers a sexy Marilyn Monroe sauntering across Cannery Row after her shift at the San Xavier sardine cannery in 1952's "Clash by Night"?

Since 1999, Monterey Movie Tours founder and president Doug Lumsden has escorted individuals and groups on a scenic tour of Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach and Carmel.

"It's the only daily scenic tour of the Monterey Peninsula, " said Lumsden. In 2001, he was asked to put together a special tour for the 30th anniversary of "Play Misty for Me" for director Clint Eastwood. Lumsden decided that the more than 200 films shot in Monterey County would add an interesting perspective to his scenic tour. Two years later, he built a 33-passenger motor coach with eight overhead monitors, headsets and digital sound.

Each day, as Lumsden drives the customized coach along the streets of the Peninsula, he describes historic and scenic surroundings. When he reaches a point of interest, he slows or stops the coach and punches up a movie clip of a scene filmed on that very street.

"Movies enhance the tour, " said Lumsden.

"It allows us to show the Monterey Peninsula as it used to look. We're able to show the rich history of Monterey." As the coach moves slowly along Cannery Row, scenes filmed for "Clash by Night" show fishing boats hauling in sardines, and how that local fish was processed in the canneries that are now only a dim memory.

"Our coastline has been a stand-in for Corsica, England, and Pine Island, off the coast of Maine," said Lumsden. In the spirit of moviemaking illusion, Warner Bros.

transformed a home in Pacific Grove into the Pine Island Inn, and Monterey's Colton Hall into the Briarwood School for Girls for the Sandra Dee-Troy Donohue teen soap opera, "A Summer Place."

Lumsden weaves local historical facts and points of interest with movie lore. At the Monterey Bay Aquarium, he describes 1986's "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," in which the Aquarium stood in for the fictional "Crustacean Institute." Lumsden then tells his passengers about the nearby Hopkins Marine Station, opened in 1892, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, designated 100 years later.

Inside Pebble Beach, as the coach passes Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Lumsden explains that each hole is named for a character or place in Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure novel, "Treasure Island." The movie of the same name, which starred Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore and Jackie Cooper, was filmed on Monterey Bay in 1934, Lumsden added.

Movies have been filmed on the Monterey Peninsula from the early silent movies of 1897, to the 2002 "We Were Soldiers," in which Fort Hunter-Liggett "became" Vietnam.

"The first $1 million movie, the silent picture 'Foolish Wives,' was filmed in Pebble Beach and at Point Lobos in 1922, " said Lumsden enthusiastically. "A lot of classic movies have been filmed here, like 'National Velvet,' with Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney, and 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,' with Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. "

One of the most famous scenes in movie history was filmed in Big Sur, but it took Lumsden years of research to receive confirmation.

"'From Here to Eternity,' released in 1953, was filmed on location on Oahu in Hawaii, " Lumsden said. "But the director, Fred Zinnemann, didn't like the way the beach scene with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr turned out. Zinnemann didn't want to take the cast and crew back to Hawaii, so he drove north from Los Angeles looking for the right beach. They ended up reshooting that famous scene, with Lancaster and Kerr kissing in the rushing surf, at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur. No wonder they have goose bumps.

"We have a rich history of moviemaking here," added Lumsden. "It's a pleasure to drive around the Monterey Peninsula every day and show it to people from all over the world."

The Monterey Movie Tours scenic motor coach departs daily at 1:00 p.
