Carmel >> Three bestselling mystery writers will be the featured attractions April 24 at "Mystery Edition," a fundraising event for the Carmel Public Library.

Mystery aficionados will have the opportunity to engage in casual conversation with Jeffery Deaver, Elizabeth George and John Lescroart at the gathering, which begins with a 7 p.m. wine tasting and book signing.

At 8 p.m., the authors will discuss their work and the value of supporting community libraries.

"These three authors waived their speaker fees to come to our event, mingle with people during the wine-tasting and do their book signings. People who come are going to get a good show," said Amy Donohue, executive director of the Carmel Library Foundation. "It's going to be a wonderful evening and a unique opportunity to hear these accomplished writers talk about their work and their lives as writers."

Deaver is the author of 32 novels, including 11 featuring quadriplegic criminologist Lincoln Rhyme and his protegee, Amelia Sachs. The first book in the series, "The Bone Collector," was made into a 1999 movie starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie; the latest, "The Skin Collector," was published this year.

Deaver, a former journalist and attorney, has also published three collections of short stories and a nonfiction law book, and in 2011 was chosen to write a novel in the James Bond series, "Carte Blanche." He has received or been short-listed for a number of awards around the world.

George's Scotland Yard inspector Thomas Lynley has been featured in 18 novels, many of them adapted by the BBC. Her first in the series, "A Great Deliverance," won three mystery awards and was nominated for an Edgar. Her most recent works include 2012's "Believing the Lie," 2013's "Just One Evil Act" and this year's "The Edge of Water," the second novel in a new series for young adults.

Lescroart is known for his series of legal and crime thriller novels featuring the characters Dismas Hardy, Abe Glitsky and Wyatt Hunt. Sixteen of his books have been on the New York Times bestseller list. Among his best-known works are "Dead Irish" (1989), "The 13th Juror" (1994), "The Mercy Rule" (1998), "The Second Chair" (2001), "The Hunt Club" (2006) and "The Hunter" (2013).

George and Lescroart also have written short stories.

"One hundred percent of Carmel Public Library's collection programs and services are funded through charitable donations, so we are thrilled that these prominent writers have generously donated their time to headline the library foundation's annual benefit," Donohue said.
